Building Trust to Build The Future: Why Local Nevada County Leaders Support Geoship

Jul 28, 2025

At Geoship, our mission to create sustainable, fire-proof, affordable homes is rooted in the belief that strong communities are built through collaboration and trust. That mission comes to life through the relationships we build, especially at the local level.

The support we’ve received from leaders in Nevada County isn’t just encouraging, it exemplifies how real partnership and shared values can unlock progress, even in places that tend to be cautious about adopting new approaches. This moment matters. It shows how local alignment can become a blueprint for bringing regenerative, climate-resilient housing to communities everywhere.

Real People, Real Progress

Two key champions of this effort are George Shureck, the Building Director of Nevada County, and Doug Fleming, a dedicated member of the Nevada City Council and the former mayor.
George has been instrumental in guiding Geoship through the intricacies of local building codes and permitting, not just enforcing regulations but working with us to find creative, compliant solutions that honor both safety and innovation.

As George puts it:

“Geoship’s work could bring transformative benefits to our community. From resilient and sustainable housing to meaningful jobs to a new model for regenerative living, it checks a lot of the boxes.”

Doug has also been an incredible advocate and friend to the project. His enthusiasm for Geoship goes beyond city council business, it’s personal. In Doug’s words:

“Geoship’s mission to create radically affordable, sustainable, and resilient bioceramic geodesic domes deeply resonates with Nevada City's values of ecological stewardship, climate resilience, and embracing innovation.”

Fire safety is a major concern in our region, and Doug emphasized the importance of our bioceramic material:

“This innovation, coupled with their focus on sustainability, positions Geoship to bring not only economic diversification through job creation in advanced manufacturing, but also to showcase a tangible path toward a more secure and sustainable future in housing.”

A Playbook for the Future

Having the trust and backing of local leaders like George and Doug is critical to our ability to do this work with integrity. It helps us move through regulatory processes with greater clarity and speed. More importantly, it builds confidence within our team and within the wider community that we’re doing something that matters.

This is more than a local milestone. It is a demonstration that the Geoship model works, even in jurisdictions with complex codes or unfamiliarity with new materials. What we’re piloting in Nevada County is a roadmap: listen deeply, align with local values, work side by side with regulators, and earn trust through action.

Building What Matters

As Geoship grows, so does our ability to help cultivate a thriving local industry rooted in sustainable construction and regenerative design. By establishing our factory here, we’re creating skilled jobs, contributing to the local economy, and inspiring a new generation of builders, designers, and doers.
The ripple effects are real, and they go far beyond us. This work is positioning Nevada County as a leader in ecological innovation and community-based development.

We’re so grateful to be doing this alongside people like George, Doug, and the broader network of neighbors and leaders who are helping shape what’s possible here. Together, we’re laying the foundation, quite literally, for a future that is more connected, more resilient, and more beautiful than we imagined.

Opening Our Doors to the Local Community

We’ve launched a new monthly tradition: Geoship First Fridays. These gatherings invite local leaders, builders, creatives, and change-makers into our space for casual connection, open dialogue, and a behind-the-scenes look at our work.

Each event offers informal tours of the factory and mock-build, along with meaningful conversations that help strengthen community ties and inspire shared visions of regeneration and innovation. By welcoming our neighbors, we stay grounded in our mission to build homes that reconnect people to nature, each other, and purpose.

At our most recent event, we had over 40+ people with attendance growing week by week!
